Independence Day. Yesterday was the day when we remember the historic event when the Declaration of Independence was adopted, separating the 13 colonies from Great Britain…ooooor when Will Smith defeated an army of alien invaders. Whatever is your cup of tea.
I’m not as patriotic as the next guy, so I prefer to focus on the drift of it all: freedom.
Freedom, personal freedom, is such a huge cultural value with us Americans. It sits in the center of most major public debates: gun control, marriage equality, abortion, etc. We independently interpret the word freedom and then we fight for it…well, some do.
(now in my old man voice)
But these young’ens don’t get it.
They can get distracted by the ‘burgs and dogs, the corn on the cob, and the fireworks. They learn about Thomas Jefferson in school and say, “Thank You.” They focus on the freedom given from the past, and forget the freedom needed in the present. And no, I’m not talking about doing something wrong or harmful to others and then saying, “What?! It’s a free country, isn’t it?”
I’m talking about using your freedom for something or some one.
It’s a free country, but some aren’t free. They’re trapped in systemic, emotional, financial, occupational, and yes, even physical oppression.
So get off my lawn…and use your freedom so others can have it too.
