Have You Ignored Your Need for Rest?

In his book The Good and Beautiful God, James Bryan Smith makes the argument that sleep is a spiritual discipline.

I like this idea…a lot.

But it’s not complete (and I think Smith would agree) without actual rest.  I’m talking about a restful mind…a rested spirit.  People oftentimes fail to recognize a restlessness within them.  No, instead of facing that head on, they begin to medicate that uneasy feeling with whatever floats their boat: food, tobacco, sex, drugs, or even seemingly harmless things like Facebook or gossip.  Of course these things only temporarily medicate the feeling, not the issue that has made us restless in the first place.

It’s super uncomfortable, but face that thing that has made you restless.  God is there with healing.
